BPA FREE Lunch Trays!
Coming soon to the school cafeteria are BPA-free lunch trays!  Newcastle parent Susan Reinhold has identified the harmful plastics such as BPA that may come in contact with our children’s and staff’s food at the school cafeteria, and she is driving efforts to remove these plastics from our school.   The new lunch trays are being replaced not only at Newcastle Elementary but throughout the entire Issaquah School District of 22 schools and 5,000 students, with the costs of replacement covered entirely by the District.   For more information about both safe and unsafe plastics, refer to the following link: http://www.aoec.org/PEHSU/documents/bpa_patient_july_8_08.pdf    ... read full article

Box Tops Contest a Huge Success!
Earlier this year, families cut, tore and clipped over 15,000 Box Tops from General Mills brand products. This relatively simple act raised the PTSA $1,500! Once everything was counted up, we found that Mrs. Buder’s class won the contest submitting 1,930 Box Tops and Mrs. DeJesus’s class came in second place with 1,570 Box Tops. These classrooms won a pizza party for 1st place and a cupcake party for 2nd place. Kristin Cakarnis, Cathy Andrews, and Michelle Robinson reported on the progress our Kindergarten students are making this year, as well as provided an update on how iPads are being used in one Kindergarten classroom. The Newcastle Elementary PTSA is sponsoring a food drive from November 1-16 to benefit members of our community as the holiday season approaches.  All donations will go to the Issaquah Food Bank.  In addition to the pantry staples that they always need, the food bank is currently requesting canned tuna, canned salmon, self-stable juice, baby wipes, toiletries, diapers (sizes 4-6), new socks, new underwear, cleaning products and camping equipment.   Donation bins will be located upstairs and downstairs at Newcastle Elementary.  One donation bin in each location will be marked "Crazy Hair Day" and one will be marked "Pajama Day."  ... read full article

We are thrilled to announce that the students passed our sales goal, selling OVER $30,000 in Entertainment Books!!!  Mrs. Robinson’s class is the lucky winner of the pizza party, having 80% of her students sell at least 1 book.  The cupcake party will go to both Mrs. Canadey and Mrs. Reimer’s classes, which both had 71% of their students sell at least 1 book.  A whopping 47 students sold 10 books or more and won the lunchtime limo ride to McDonalds!  Because there were so many winners, limo rides will occur over the next few weeks.  Finally, grade level winners ... read full article

The Newcastle PTSA Emergency Preparedness Committee has sent home a Comfort Kit with your child.  This kit consists of an uplifting message and a picture of your family on an index card within a plastic Ziploc baggie.  These kits provide some measure of comfort to your child in the event of an emergency.  Please include your child’s name on the baggie.   Each kit will be returned to you at the end of the school year. The Fall Session for Lego STEM Class After School Enrichment begins on September 26th and registration is open now.    Class size is limited and students will be accepted on a first come basis.
