| Spring Food Drive |
Spring Food DriveThe Newcastle Elementary PTSA is sponsoring a Spring Food Drive through March 28 to benefit the students at Tiger Mountain Community High School. Tiger Mountain Community High School is the only alternative high school in our school district. Many of the students there receive their only meals of the day at school and struggle without the basic necessities of life at home. The donations we collect will be given to the administrators at the high school to be distributed to the students as needed. Suggested donations include: granola bars, cup-a-soup (and similar small, portable food), pasta sauce, spaghetti and other pasta, cold cereals, pancake mix (small sizes, please), flour, sugar and brown sugar (small sizes, please), socks for both boys and girls, yarn and personal hygiene items for both boys and girls. Donation bins will be located upstairs and downstairs at Newcastle Elementary. Mrs. Newton has promised that if we collect at least four full bins of food, then she will read a book from the school's roof and Mr. Miller has promised that during one week each class can choose their PE activity! Let's all work together to help students who really need it. If you have any questions, please contact Kara Beal or 425-793-9708. | 3/14/2012 | 3/28/2012 |

| Science Fair |
Science FairThe science fair is fast approaching – May 11 from 6-8 pm. Students will be bringing home logistical information at the end of this week via Kid Mail. This e-mail highlights a few important details.First, please ensure that your scientist takes his/her project to school on Wednesday, May 9, Thursday, May 10, or Friday, May 11 during regular school hours. Please note: Students are NOT allowed to transport their tri-folds and projects on the bus. If you need to deliver the science project after school has started for the day, please take it to office and they will ensure it gets to the appropriate classroom. Teachers have graciously agreed to store the projects in their classrooms until the science fair. Volunteers will be setting up the science fair projects starting immediately after school on Friday, so we will need all projects ready to go by 3:40 pm on May 11. Second, please make sure that your scientist’s tri-fold includes his/her name, teacher and grade level. Third, go to our Science Web page to view the checklist for student projects. Scientists from the community will be using this checklist to help in providing feedback to students at the event. Finally, student scientists will be asked to stand by their projects for a specified period during the science fair to answer questions from the judges and others at the science fair. Everyone will also have an opportunity to view projects created by other students. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s projects! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. | Wanted...Used Books |
Wanted...Used BooksThe Spring Used Book Fair (SUB) is just around the corner, so while you are doing your post-holiday cleanup and gearing-up on spring cleaning around the house, please review your book inventory to see what books your kids have outgrown that could be donated to our school book fair. If you want to place them in a bag and label it “donation” they can be dropped at the PTSA office. We always have a need for books appropriate for the 4th and 5th graders (as most books donated are for 4-9 year olds) so remember to ask your neighborhood friends with middle schoolers for any book donations they may ready to depart with.SUB will be held in March and each book will be available for purchase for just $1/each! Proceeds go to PTSA and ultimately to the needs of our wonderful school! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity and support! | 1/11/2012 | 3/10/2012 |

They just might! Since our school geography bee is a part of the National Geographic Bee, the winner of the school bee will have the chance to take a written test to qualify for the state bee. The top 100 students in the state (selected based on qualifying test scores) qualify to represent their schools and compete at the state level. State winners are then invited to the National Geographic headquarters in late May to compete in the national finals for scholarships in the amount of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000. | Washington State is at risk of a midyear funding cut that will greatly impact public education |
Washington State is at risk of a midyear funding cut that will greatly impact public educationWashington State is at risk of a midyear funding cut that will greatly impact public education. We need to contact our local legislators to encourage them to fully fund public education. Budget decisions will be made during the Special Session that begins on November 28, 2011 and many of these decisions could take effect immediately. The following proposed budget cuts will impact our school district:Loss of $2.4 million for class size funding causing local class sizes to increase Loss of State funding for Kindergarten and early childhood education programs Loss of one full week of quality instructional time for all students and a loss of $2.2 million in State funding if the school year is shortened by one full week Loss of State funding for highly capable and honors programs (SAGE, Merlin) Loss of $400,000 to support National Board certifications Loss of funding for science, technology and STEM programs Loss of $3.7 million for bus transportation You can help support our local schools by contacting your local legislators now and tell them not to cut public school funding. One of the easiest things to do is make the subject heading of your email your wishes. For example, “Please fund the SKILLS Act” or “Don’t cut our school year.” Sometimes they just count the emails in support of or against an issue based on the subject heading. Go to www.leg.wa.gov/ Click on Find Your Legislator Enter your street address Your Senator and 2 Representatives will be listed Call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-600 and leave a message for your local legislators. | Art Docent Volunteers Needed! |
Art Docent Volunteers Needed! We need your help! The Newcastle PTSA is excited to continue its Art Docent Program for the 7th year, but we are missing docents in several classrooms. If your child has either: Ms Andrews, Mrs Reimer, Mrs Generaux, Mrs Keegan, Ms Keller, Mr Neugebauer or Mrs Smith, please consider becoming a docent volunteer. No formal art training is needed. The program provides each docent with art lesson plans and samples of the projects, so the planning is already done for you. There are 6-8 projects over the course of the year and each can be completed in a one hour session. Volunteers get to choose the date and time of the projects so it is easy to work into your own schedule. Volunteering as an art docent is a fun and rewarding way to get involved in your child's classroom. Please consider becoming a docent. For more information please e-mail Rachel Handsman or Heidi Furman. | 9/27/2011 | 10/12/2011 |
