Congratulations To Our 2020 PTSA Golden Acorn Award Winners

Heather Ackermann served on the PTSA Board as Co-VP of Outreach for two years. Prior to that she was the Chair of the Food Drive, a role she continues even today, helping to collect and organize donated food, overseeing the Food Drive raffles at events, and transporting hundreds of pounds of food to the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank. She plans Lunch for the Break activities, delivering large boxes of food to local churches, and helps with the Holiday Gift Barn, organizing and delivering toys. She works with the office staff to organize Lost and Found items, helps oversee Staff Appreciation luncheons, and spends many Fridays popping popcorn for the students. As if that weren’t enough, Heather can also be found at school volunteering in the classrooms, for art projects, and helping teachers with copies and class organization. She is a constant presence on field trips and at almost any school activity or event. Outside of the school, Heather agreed, without hesitation, to take the lead on a District-wide program to collect and deliver excess food from the Newcastle lunch program to the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank. Every Wednesday morning, she works with the Newcastle lunch staff to collect excess drinks, snacks and other non-perishable foods for delivery. She also helps collect snack bags from IFCB for the District-wide Power Packs program, delivering them to Newcastle where they are distributed to students in need. Her commitment extends beyond Newcastle to Maywood where she is part of the committee executing Staff Appreciation Luncheons. Thank you Heather!

When her family moved to Newcastle just over two-years ago, Nicole Anderson quickly became a frequent presence at the school. She became an Art Docent, a frequent classroom and library volunteer, and was a smiling face for the kids on popcorn Fridays. She also became an instrumental part of the PTSA Auction team, procuring items all from all over the community to help us achieve our fundraising goals. On top of all of her school volunteer activities, she has now taken on significant leadership roles for the PTSA and the school. She currently serves as Co-VP of Outreach for the PTSA, organizing school events as well as assisting families in need. When no one else would take it on, she stepped in as Popcorn Chair, ensuring kids would continue to enjoy this tradition. In addition, she serves on the ISD Site Council and has generously volunteered her time and expertise to lead our 2020/2021 PTSA Auction. Outside of school, Nicole has served as the Cookie Lead for her daughter’s Girl Scout troop for the past two years. Thank you Nicole!

As Co-VP of Outreach for the PTSA Board for the past several years, Tammy Chin has left her mark on the Newcastle Elementary community. She has organized food drives, toy drives, and sunshine gifts to help those families in the community experiencing hardship, and put together movie nights to bring our families together. In addition to her commitment to the PTSA Board, Tammy is an ever-present volunteer in the school. Her commitment to kids extends beyond the school, however, as she has spent numerous hours coaching girls’ basketball for the Liberty High School feeder program, serving as an assistant coach and now head coach for the 4th grade Select Liberty Basketball team. Her love of kids and sports extends beyond our local community as Tammy runs (and participates in) several volleyball and basketball leagues throughout the greater Seattle area. Tammy is also very active in her church, spending weekends teaching Bible school and organizing numerous fundraisers and luncheons for the church. Thank you Tammy!

Ram Sarma has spent the past 3+ years working tirelessly, and often behind-the-scenes, for the betterment of our school and larger community. He served in a leadership capacity as Secretary of the PTSA Board, creating processes to help the Board run more smoothly and efficiently. He has been instrumental in the success of two auctions now, creating and maintaining online content and catalogs and putting together the presentations shown during Live Auctions. In addition, Ram worked with our VP of Programs to bring the Science Expo back to Newcastle, coordinating with vendors, teachers, students and parents to deliver a fantastic STEM experience. Ram also serves as a Room Parent, library volunteer, and art volunteer while taking advantage of every opportunity to help in the classroom. As a parent representative to the ISD Site Council, Ram helps influence and craft the district-wide programs that impact Newcastle Elementary. Finally, Ram is demonstrating his commitment to the greater community by volunteering with Census 2020 to ensure Newcastle census data is gathered accurately so the community gets the resources and support it deserves. Thank you Ram!

Capture This Historic Time For The Yearbook

This year is turning out to be one like no other. Help us commemorate it in the yearbook by sharing photos of how your family is spending this time – what “homeschool” looks like for you, fun projects undertaken, how you’re creating a sense of normalcy and community. You can also share photos from Spirit Week this week. Pictures should be primarily of Newcastle students and should be 750k or larger. Send photos (1-2 per student) to Jessica Anderson at jessiej0608@gmail.com.

Lunch For The Break... And Beyond

Lunch for the Break is a community-wide program supporting children, grades K-12, within the Issaquah School District. The program helps alleviate hunger by providing a week’s worth of free grocery items for student to be able to prepare breakfast, lunch, and snacks for themselves.

The Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank, in partnership with the Issaquah Schools Foundation, is working to make sure all students living in the Issaquah School District have enough to eat during this extended school closure.

If you are able to DONATE, please purchase boxes directly through Supply All Kids,

If you are IN NEED, please register online for our Lunch for the Break program - registration is critical to ensure we are adequately prepared to meet community need!
