CONGRATULATIONS GOLDEN ACORN WINNERS!

We’re honored to present the winners of the 2021 PTSA Golden Acorn Awards. These three individuals have gone above and beyond in their commitment to our students, school, and overall community. Be sure to thank them for their service.

Jessica Anderson

Jessica has been an incredible asset to the PTSA since her oldest started at Newcastle. She has served as Yearbook Chair for the past 4 years and has been a constant presence at all events, taking pictures and capturing moments to create beautiful yearbooks. She has single-handedly delivered incredible yearbooks to our students. Last year and this year she went above-and-beyond in terms of the time spent and the creativity put into creating yearbooks during far-from-normal years. This year she advocated hard to get Dorian onto campus to make sure students could get portraits done, followed up with parents when pictures were not taken to make sure their students would still be represented, worked with teachers to find creative ways to capture class pictures, and helped come up with new and engaging sections for the yearbook to commemorate the fun students were still able to have this year. Beyond the yearbook and when schools were open, she has been a constant volunteer presence. For nearly every year she's had a child at the school, she has served as a library volunteer, a room parent, and an art docent. She has also served on the 5th grade promotion committee and chaperoned 5th grade camp and has been instrumental in putting together staff appreciation lunches as a volunteer. For someone who has not served directly on the board and who prefers a more low-key role, she has been a presence in the school perhaps more than any other. What's more, she always has a smile to offer and a positive attitude to share.

Peter O’Donoghue

For the past 3 years, Peter has chaired and headed up our Fall Carnival and Spaghetti Dinner. This is one of the highlights of the students' school year. They dress up for Halloween, get to visit a haunted house, win tons of prizes and get served a real Spaghetti Dinner by a swarm of Chefs. Peter was the mastermind behind the Spaghetti Dinner. He recruited "dad" volunteers from the school and surrounding community to pose as chefs. He saw this as an opportunity to increase participation by dads from the community. Serving Spaghetti dinner to hundreds of students and their families required some significant coordination. From cooking spaghetti, warming breadsticks, and preparing salad and serving beverages to getting all these meals to the seated families moving through the cafeteria - the epicenter of the Carnival. Peter was able to make this happen, and we now have a great number of dad volunteers for our big events. What’s more, he stepped up and spearheaded the movement to make our Halloween event happen, even during Covid, turning it into a “Boo-Thru”, entertaining our students and families with games and decorations while also raising a significant amount of money to benefit the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank.

Sarika Sikka

Sarika has been an invaluable asset to the PTSA over the last 4 years. One year after joining our elementary school, she jumped onto the PTSA Exec Board in the role of VP Programs. While in this role she helped plan, manage, and execute many family nights, including the Fall Costume Carnival, Cultural Nights, and the introduction of our Science Expo. While she doesn’t lead the Art Docent Program, her ability to help recruit and support leaders for LionArt over those 4 years helped make it the incredible program it is. This year, Sarika bravely raised her hand to be a Co-Chair to our school's biennial Auction. This role is nothing less than a full-time job for many weeks of the year, and perhaps even more so when planning it during a pandemic. Creating excitement amongst families while building relationships with the school community and the community at large is crucial to a successful event and Sarika’s can-do attitude and relentless focus on delivering for our students have been incredible. Sarika and her partner are well on their way to hitting the goal set for an auction during a remote/hybrid year of pandemic schooling. While this alone displays her commitment to our PTSA and school, she has also served as a classroom and field trip volunteer throughout the years and has supported all of the students in our district through her support of and involvement with the Issaquah Schools Foundation.

THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING STEM WEEK!

We hope you all were able to enjoy all or part of the STEM Week activities last week. Thank you to everyone who participated and to our VPs of Programs, Albert Kim and Bisa Meek, for organizing it all! And congratulations to Zachary Li and Quinn McCall, the winners of our Lakeshore Learning gift cards!
